God's Amazing Love (Week 1 of Our Summer Devotion Series)
John 3:16-17 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.” (ESV)*
“For God so loved…” God’s love is merciful and gracious. It is unfailing and infinite. (Ephesians 3:14-19) Although, like any good Father, He has and will sometimes discipline His children, His love never ends. His love for His children is so strong that He sacrificed His own Son, a very part of Himself, for our redemption. Romans 5:8 says, “but God shows his love for us in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.”
I know the love of God. I’ve experienced His forgiving grace which I do not deserve and have in no way earned. It is the free gift of a love so great we cannot fully comprehend it from a God so amazing that we cannot truly imagine Him. Jesus said, “Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends. You are my friends if you do what I command you. No longer do I call you servants…but I have called you friends, for all that I heard from my Father I have made known to you.” (John 15:13-15) We are friends of God if we believe in Jesus Christ.
People spend their entire lives seeking meaning and happiness in life. They seek it through their jobs, through relationships, through money, and even through pleasure, but nothing can ever satisfy the human soul like communion with our Father. There is no peace or joy like that of knowing the God of the universe as your friend and a very present help in times of trouble. (Psalm 46:1)
Father God, we worship You in gratitude for the saving work done by and through Your Son, Jesus Christ. We bow before You, acknowledging Your awe-inspiring power and might, as well as Your loving mercy. Father, we anxiously await the day when every knee shall bow at the name of Jesus. We ask that Your Spirit would surround, fill, and guide us until that day arrives. In Jesus’ most holy name – Amen!
