Overwhelmed and Wanting More
“He will tend his flock like a shepherd; he will gather the lambs in his arms; he will carry them in his bosom, and gently lead those that are with young.” Isaiah 40:11 (ESV)
The depth of who God is confounds me. The more I study about Him, the more questions I have. The more I learn of Him, the more beautiful complexities I discover. The more I know Him, the more I want to know Him.
Isaiah 40:11 is a perfect example of that. In the Scriptures surrounding this verse, we learn of God’s greatness, of His power and authority, of his knowledge and understanding, of His absolute incomparability to any other being ever in existence. Isaiah 40:9-31 describes the superiority of God in vivid detail.
But tucked within those verses detailing His authority, wisdom, and power, we see that He is so much more. Isaiah 40:11 describes a God who cares deeply for His people by likening Him to a shepherd.
Like a shepherd, God provides for His flock supplying all their needs “according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:19) God gives generously out of His abundance to His children, ensuring we are cared for and equipped for this life.
Like a shepherd, God gathers His lambs, going so far as to search for a single one who is lost, rejoicing when he is safely home. (Matthew 18:12-14) God does not give up on His children no matter how much we deserve complete abandonment by Him. He continually pursues us to bring us back into a relationship with Him.
Like a shepherd, God personally carries His people so they can never be snatched from His hand. (John 10:27-29) Once we come into a relationship with God, He never lets us go. He keeps us safe from the evil one and, though this life will still be full of hardships, God’s sovereign hand is there to protect us from anything that threatens to steal us from Him.
Like a shepherd, God gently leads us and directs our path when we look to Him. (Proverbs 3:6) Although His power and might are beyond compare, God is gentle and does not force Himself on His children. Instead, He beckons us to follow Him and promises to lead us if we only trust in Him.
When I think of the power and authority of our God, of the wisdom and knowledge He holds, it is undeniable that no one compares to His greatness. I stand in awe of Him.
But, when I think of the mighty God of creation bowing down, making Himself like a humble, lowly shepherd to care so completely for His children, I am filled with a new wonder that brings me to my knees as I marvel at the layers of His goodness.
I am overwhelmed by Him, and it leaves me wanting to know Him more.
Heavenly Father, good and faithful Shepherd, I am in awe of you! No one compares to you, God! My mind cannot comprehend your greatness. Even more, I cannot understand why you care so completely for someone like me. But I am so thankful you do! I worship you, magnificent, sovereign God, and praise you for the depth of who you are. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
