What Is Needed Now

“If my people who are called by my name humble themselves, and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land.” 2 Chronicles 7:14

This is a significant week for the United States of America as our elected officials take office. Some people are thrilled with our incoming administration. Some people are concerned.

No matter how we feel about the individuals who have been elected, as Christians, we have the responsibility to pray for our leaders. After all, it is our Father who placed them into the positions they will hold. (Romans 13:1)

Friends, I think we can all agree that there is a great deal of anger and hurt in our country. It must break the Father’s heart to see such widespread division in a nation that claims to be united under Him. Doesn’t it break your heart, too?

2 Chronicles 7:14 is clear that we must humble ourselves and seek Him for our nation to be healed. We must pray for forgiveness and turn from our sins while asking the Lord’s blessing for our country.

It is my hope, and I imagine most of yours, as well, that we will once again be a nation that passionately follows after the Lord.

James 5:16 urges us to “confess [our] sins to one another and pray for one another, that [we] may be healed.” The scripture continues, reminding us that “the prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working.”

There is power in prayer. We must pray for our nation.

There is also tremendous power in the Word of God. Hebrews 4:12 tells us, “the Word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword.”

When we combine the power of prayer and the power of the Word, we become mighty Kingdom warriors, petitioning the Almighty Himself. As His redeemed children, we have the privilege of approaching the throne of Christ, the Great High Priest, with confidence. When we do, we will receive mercy and grace in our time of need. (Hebrews 4:14-16)

When our prayers are infused with the two-edged sword of the Word, they become even more powerful!

Sweet friends, we will never fix the hurt in our nation on our own. But we know the One who can, and we have a direct line of communication with Him!

Below is a prayer for our nation. It’s filled with scripture because my words are insufficient, but the Word of God is always enough.

Today, I ask you to commit to praying the following prayer every day for the rest of the month. Better yet, pray this prayer for the rest of the year.

Can you imagine the power that would radiate throughout this nation if the Church got on bended knees and petitioned the Lord on behalf of our leaders and citizens? I don’t know about you, but I want to see the might of God at work in our nation!

Will you join us as we seek the Lord and ask Him to heal our land?

Almighty Father,

Thank You for your goodness to us. Thank You for the freedom and blessing You have given to our nation. We praise You for the freedoms we enjoy. Help us not to take that gift for granted.

Father, all dominion belongs to You, for You rule over the nations. (Psalm 22:28). You are the One who makes every nation, allotting their times and setting their boundaries, so they would seek You and find You. (Acts 17:26,27) You are the Almighty God, and we praise Your great name!

Merciful Father, we confess our sins of selfishness and pride, of taking our freedoms for granted. We humbly call on Your name and ask You to heal our land. (2 Chronicles 7:14) Your Word tells us that sin condemns us, but righteousness exalts a nation. (Proverbs 14:34) Please help us to live in righteousness.

We lift up our president, vice president, and elected leadership to You today, asking You to lead and bless them as they lead us. Above all, please save their souls and give them the knowledge of truth because that is what You desire. (1 Timothy 2:4) Make our leaders wise men and women who will serve You with awe. (Psalm 2:10,11) May they seek peace and bring prosperity to our nation. (Jeremiah 29:7)

Father, we pray that You will be the Lord of our nation and that we will have Your blessing. (Psalm 33:12) Help us to remember that You established our government and put our leaders into place. (Romans 13:1) May we obey Your command to honor our leaders and show proper respect to all people. (1 Peter 2:17) Please remove all bitterness, rage, anger, fighting, slander, and malice from our nation and replace those with kindness and compassion, helping us learn to forgive one another, as You forgive us. (Ephesians 4:31,32)

We look forward to the day when the Righteous Judge, called Faithful and True, will return for His Kingdom, the day when we will see the King of kings face-to-face! (Revelation 19:11,16) Until that day comes, may we bring honor and glory to You by the way we live and love others.

Please be with the United States of America, our leaders, and our citizens today. We love you! In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.
